Work is well under way on a new exit which will ease congestion and get traffic flowing at a busy Scarborough retail park.
Alteration work is nearly complete at Seamer Road Retail Park, which is home to popular stores including B&Q, Halfords, Pets at Home, Next Home, Brantano and Dunelm Mill.
The project is the culmination of two years of discussion about how access to from the park could be improved.
As busy times, there have been problems with long tailbacks, especially with vehicles leaving the park onto Seamer Road.
A planning application got the go-ahead in May and work on the new exit began last month.
Transportation director Toan Chau, of contractors Hydrock, said: “It’s been more complicated than we originally thought.
“There’s only one location where the access can be and there are lots of utilities to consider, such as phone lines, water pipes and electricity cables.
“It’s all in that area, so it’s taking a bit longer than we thought.”
Mr Chau said that the majority of the work should be completed this week and that the next step is to put a traffic island in place on Seamer Road.
He added: “It will be left-turn only out of the retail park at the new exit.
“We’ve done lots of calculations and it will allow a lot more traffic out.
“Only six parking spaces will be lost and there is plenty of parking, especially down the side of Dunelm Mill.”
Mr Chau said they are hoping to get started on the traffic island as soon as possible and are just waiting to hear back from Scarborough Council with a start date.
He added: “When we do get started it will be quite a quick job and should only take three to four days.”
