Young musicians hit the high notes

YOUNGSTERS at Scarborough Area Music Centre have been put through to the next stage of a national music event.

After a successful performance in Hull, the Junior Concert Band have now been invited to perform at the next stage of the National Festival of Music for Youth.

This will take place at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham on Monday July 2.

Press officer Jan Corrie said: “They played the music from Pirates of the Caribbean, which is a difficult piece.

“It sounded absolutely wonderful and it must have impressed the judges.”

She added that the musicians in the band are aged from just eight years old and recognised that this was a huge achievement.

The Scarborough Area Music Centre, which is based at Scarborough Sixth Form College in Sandybed Lane, is now looking forward to holding two open events for members of the public.

An open morning will take place on Saturday May 12, from 10am to noon. Coffee will be available.

This will be followed by an open evening on Monday May 14, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Parents and guardians with children who have an interest in music are warmly invited to come along to see and hear all the range of bands, orchestras and ensembles which are part of the centre.
