SCHOOLCHILDREN from Eastfield brightened up their High Street by helping plant up raised beds in the precinct area.

For several years, the beds had been quite overgrown and a source of complaints from local residents.

Groundwork North Yorkshire teamed up with local gardening enthusiasts and secured funding from Scarborough Council’s Community Pride Initiative to replant and revitalise the beds.

The new planting scheme contains a colourful mix of shrubs and perennials that will provide all year round interest and also attract bees and butterflies to the area. The children who helped with the planting were all members of Overdale School’s gardening club.

Tom Mutton, local manager for Groundwork North Yorkshire, said: “The children had a lot of fun planting up the beds and were very pleased with how they looked after all their hard work. I’m sure they will enjoy watching them grow over the coming spring and summer and I hope they feel proud.”
