The Scarborough News was named Yorkshire’s best weekly newspaper at the O2 Media Awards.
Playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn sent a personal message to award winners and said he was thrilled his “adopted” home-town newspaper had won the title.
He added: “I think we share a common goal, theatre companies and journalists, in trying to bring people together and celebrate being human.”
PC Sara Widdrington, the hero police officer who bravely challenged a gunman in a local Tesco store while she was off duty and shopping with her young son, presented Scarborough News editor Ed Asquith with the trophy.
News reporter Daniel Gregory was also highly commended at the awards in the Sports Writer of the Year category.
Whitby Gazette reporter Karl Hansell scooped the Feature Writer of the Year award. This year’s awards were held at The Royal Armouries in Leeds.
