My wife and I live in the Midlands and have just returned from another very enjoyable weekend in Scarborough for the jazz festival held annually at the Spa.
Mike and Marian Gordon, who organise the event, are held in high regard by the UK jazz fraternity and their Scarborough festival programme is an important highlight in the UK jazz calendar. We and most of our jazz colleagues are regulars and book our next year’s accommodation as we leave. We love Scarborough and, apart from the jazz weekend, have made other visits for theatre or use Scarborough as our base when taking breaks in that area.
We know that this coalition government has seriously cut funding of arts and culture although this sector, in which the Spa is a major player, makes an important contribution to the well-being and quality of life of the community.
We are sure your local authorities and other funders appreciate the need for continuing support in this sector and hope there is no substance in whispers circulating that there is some doubt as to the future of the Spa. We look forward to our next visit and, in our diary have already inked in the dates planned for your 2012 jazzfest.
