Blowing the band’s trumpet

During the past few days we have been hearing a lot about the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and the Government’s cut in funding bands while giving millions to the London-based opera, ballet etc.

The Grimethorpe band has always been among the top brass bands in this country for as long as I can remember and probably longer as my memory only goes back to the early 1930s when at home we had gramophone records of the most popular bands of that time, which included Fairy Aviation, Foden Motor Works, Black Dyke Mills Band and several others, as my father was a member of the old Scarborough Town Silver Prize Band until his death.

Some years ago the Grimethorpe Colliery Band played in the film ‘Brassed Off’ and was portrayed as ‘Grimley Colliery Band’. A brilliant film which was about Margaret Thatcher closing the collieries.

It does make one wonder if Maggie’s side-kicks are trying to get their own back by trying to destroy this band.
