I WOULD like to congratulate Scarborough Choral Society and everyone involved in their splendid Centenary Concert at Westborough Church last Saturday.
Everyone I have spoken to has been full of praise for such a wonderful musical experience. Particular thanks must go to conductor Evelyn Halford, and regular accompanist Frank James for all the months of hard work leading up to the event.
The programme included the Mozart Requiem in D minor and items by Handel, Elgar, and Vaughan Williams, but the undoubted highlight of the evening was the first performance of a specially commissioned work by York composer Richard Shephard, Musicks Empire, a setting of a poem by Andrew Marvell. This had a full orchestral accompaniment, and was very well received by a capacity audience who gave the composer a thoroughly deserved resounding ovation.
Here’s wishing the society another successful hundred years!
