Energy: Bidding for gas supplies

I am sure many of us will recall the day in the 1970s when Mrs Thatcher announced the discovery of North Sea gas, which meant free gas for all of us after the initial cost of our equipment conversion, from coal gas to the new found bottomless wells of natural gas. The promise was short-lived because the electricity companies complained about unfair competition. To keep the peace gas costs were brought in line and instead of keeping the new found energy for our own internal use if was marketed to bidders.

Now we have joined the rest of the world in having to bid for our gas supplies.
