Fred was one of the nicest men

I REFER to your report of the death of Fred Mayes – one of the nicest men one was ever likely to meet.

Fred was an early member of the Phoenix Drama Club, but he was not, as you report, a founder member. The club was founded in 1947, its name coming from its rising from the war-caused ashes of the Thespians and one other society, I think the Christ Church Players.

I joined in 1948, and Fred came in a year or so later, around the same time, I think, as Shaun Glenville (the Shaun Glenville Browne of today). If those two were involved in rehearsals they were apt to be a riot for a time.
