Futurist: Last theatre icon we have

Have your say

Approximately 12 or 13 years ago I was working at the Spa, there was a meeting between council and consultants regarding the number of ‘bums on seats’ out of total availability. I said to a member of council staff, whatever else you do you should keep Mr Stead. The answer I was given was, the Futurist is finished!

There are a number of senior staff and long-serving counsellors who are determined to get rid of it!

Since then over £10 million has been spent on the Spa, £4-£6 million on the Open Air Theatre, and now suddenly the totally broke council conjures up a loan to Benchmark of £10 million for the water park.

This will become, in my opinion, the biggest white elephant of them all. This will put the fiasco of Kinderland, Marvels in the shade! All this money found for consistent loss making venues!

These are all deemed as viable and yet for the only proven crowd puller and income for town generator - nothing! I see the Open Air Theatre has already lost over £1 million and yet is deemed viable - amazing!

In the modern scale of things £2-£5 million is peanuts for the Futurist.

The Futurist should be save at all costs.
