As a long-standing member of Ryedale Indoor Bowls Club I was asked if I would help to get the bowls club opened at the beginning of September. I had heard nothing about Ryedale Indoor Bowling for three months; as a result I have joined York.
It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm, ideas and hard work of the rest of the committee. They were determined to return the membership and recruit new members, particularly young ones.
Ryedale Council produced a whole series of hoops to jump through and hurdles to clear. John Clark and the team got us through and over them all. We then had a 10-day delay until the council meeting.
The meeting was a disgrace! Politicians leaping about claiming the rewards for work we had done. The very Tory councillors who had axed our bowling club were now putting the boot into John Clark who had led the campaign against them a year ago. The bowlers who had looked on aghast a year ago were now supporting the same Tories. The Liberal Democrats helped in the kicking yet they had equally done nothing towards opening the club.
I hope the public in Norton and Ryedale remember this in the future.
