THE cost of the Alternative Vote system has been estimated by its opponents at £250 million! I can’t help feeling the smaller parties like the Greens etc only support AV as it will give them a better chance of having MPs elected, but at what cost!
Will AV really make the electoral system any more representative? Apparently the Electoral Reform Society says that if the 2010 general election had used AV there would be a slight reduction in the number of Conservative MPs, a slight increase for Labour and the Liberal Democrats, and no increase for non-mainstream candidates.
The several hundred million AV would cost might be better spent on dealing with the national debt!
Food for thought for those who support AV.
