Scarborough RUFC’s recently-formed women’s team, the Valkyries, made a flying start as they won a tournament in Darlington on their first competitive outing.

The Valkyries have only tasted action in friendly encounters to date, but travelled to Darlington in confident mood after training twice a week for the past few months.

Scarborough opened their account with a 10-0 win against Workington RUFC, before emerging victorious from their second and final group game against Acklam RUFC, this time picking up a convincing 27-0 success.

That meant the Valkyries, who have been coached by Scarborough RUFC youth development officer Tomasz Chadwick, Alex Conlin and the team’s founder, Niki Duncan, qualified for the final of the tournament against Northumbria University.

A tight clash followed with neither side wanting to concede ground, but the Valkyries broke away later in the game as their superior fitness told and they won 17-0.

Chadwick was delighted with the girls efforts, insisting they’re hard work in training has led to their early success.

He said: “To say this was their first competitive outing, the girls played superbly and really deserved to end up winning the tournament.

“I took on helping the girls in July, and their progress since then has been staggering.

“I compared it to progressing from minis standard rugby to under-15s, and that’s just in three months.

“The next step is to continue that progression.”
