Mulgrave continued their winning start to the season with a 165-run success at Forge Valley 3rds in the Derwent Valley League division A, while the league was rocked by the resignation of Thornton Dale 3rds from division C.
Oriel are top of the league after their visitors Brompton 2nds failed to raise a side, which saw the Scarborough club receive the full 20 points.
But the exit of Dale’s third team is a big blow to the league so early in the season.
League secretary Bernard Goulding said on Saturday night: “I have had a phone call from Thornton Dale Cricket Club tonight to say they are resigning their third team from Division C of the Derwent Valley Cricket League due to a lack of players. They will continue to run their second team in that division.
“As each team does not play each other team in the C division it will mean that teams when due to play Thornton Dale 3rds will now have a free Saturday and be awarded a win with 20 points - if due to play them twice then two wins and 40 points.
“As there are an odd number of teams in this division it may be possible - subject to ground availability - to arrange a friendly match with the club already without a fixture by the team which was due to play Thornton Dale 3rds - this I will leave up to clubs to arrange if they so wish - it could fill up a blank Saturday although I would stress it would only be a friendly fixture.”
