Durham’s batsmen caught the eye at Scarborough’s North Marine Road today as Yorkshire’s bowling attack were put to the sword.

After a string of early blows, Yorkshire’s LV County Championship first division title rivals compiled a hefty total of 406-6 at the close of play.

A crowd of around 2,500 that squeezed into the Scarborough venue were given an early cheer when Ryan Sidebottom struck twice in the opening balls.

He took out Keaton Jennings and Chris Borthwick for ducks in his second over and then Will Smith (20) fell to a brilliant catch from Kane Williamson off Jack Brooks, reducing Durham to 67-3.

Opener Mark Stoneman and Ben Stokes then took things on though, as both recorded centuries to turn things around.

Stoneman added 128 for the fourth wicket with Stokes before becoming Sidebottom’s 600th first-class victim, caught behind for 122.

Stokes later fell to Adil Rashid for 127, but Durham skipper Paul Collingwood (74no) and Phil Mustard (42) dominated the day’s closing overs and they claimed a fifth batting bonus point just before stumps.
