Forge Valley 3rds completed a cup double with a four-wicket win against Sherburn 2nds in the Atlas Ward Cup final at Staxton Cricket Club.

The Sherburn youngsters batted first, with Jack Pickard, 45, and Rob Worthy, 29, impressing and a late flurry from Martin Marflitt, 34no, guiding them to 133-4.

In reply, Valley openers Ian Laing, 32, and Eric Hall, 25, gave the Ayton side a good start, but it was skipper Sean Pinder’s 38 that got them back on track after they had started to get behind the run-rate.

With two overs left, Valley, who also won the Home Guard Sunday Cup, needed 16 to win and young David Ledden hit a four, a six and a four to claim the final victory for Pinder’s troops with two balls to spare.

Nick Dobson was the pick of the bowlers for Sherburn with final figures of 3-24, while promising youngster Worthy capped an outstanding all-round display with 2-12.

NIgel Pickard, managing director of sponsors Atlas Ward, presented the trophies at the end of the final, which was the last of the Derwent Valley League finals for 2012.

Result: Forge Valley 3rds 134-6 (I Laing 32, E Hall 25, S Pinder 38, D Ledden 14no, N Dobson 3-24, R Worthy 2-12) beat Sherburn 2nds 133-4 (J Pickard 45, R Worthy 29, M Marflitt 34no) by 4 wickets.
