The final was played on a cool breezy but dry afternoon at Forge Valley Cricket Club’s ground with Hospitals/Rugby Club winning the toss and electing to put Kirkbymoorside into bat.
Hospitals won the toss and invited Kirkby to bat and this looked to be a good decision when they lost opener James Magson without scoring, but his brother Adam Magson, 20, then joined Martin Thompson to put on a 37-run partnership with Magson’s runs all scored in boundaries as he struck five fours.
Andy Bayes then scored a rapid 19 and opener Martin Thompson continued to make 32 and the score was 97-4 when he was out.
Captain Jamie Harper added 31 including seven fours, but the turning point of the innings was veteran Howard Mudd, who hit eight fours on his way to 46 runs to take the Kirkby total up to 167-7.
Hospitals’ best bowlers were Scott Maw with 3-30, Mark Tennant 2-36 and Marcus Edwards with 1-17.
In reply Hospitals lost their opening batsman Marcus Edwards with just nine runs on the board, and a further wicket with the score at 31, but then a fine partnership between Scott Maw, 37, and Brett Canham, 37, took the score up to 70 and they were well up with the required run rate at the half way stage.
However, the Kirkbymoorside bowlers stuck to their task and once Canham departed, only Mark Kelly with 10 runs could reach double figures as their innings fell some 54 runs short as they were all out for 113.
The best bowling from Kirkby came from Andy Bayes with 2-12, Jez Underwood 2-22, Jamie Harper 2-18, Adam Magson 2-29 and Howard Mudd with 1-29.
The man of the match award was handed to Howard Mudd for his game-turning innings of 46.
Graham Newbold, chairman of Scarborough’s Home Guard Club, presented the runners-up cup to Hospitals/Rugby Club captain Tim Elliot and the Home Guard Sunday Cup to winning captain Jamie Harper.
Derwent Valley League secretary Bernard Goulding said: “Thank you to Forge Valley Cricket Club for the use of their ground and facilities and for providing the teas, the umpires, the scorers, the Home Guard Club for providing the man of the match award and also the two teams for playing the game in a wonderful sporting manner.”
