Despite losing by one wicket in a cracking match at Staithes Heslerton remain top of the Readers Scarborough Beckett Cricket League premier division on another weekend spoiled by heavy rain showers.

The pacesetters batted first and were dismissed for 172, a fine knock of 72 from Aussie Tim Clarke, along with 32 from in-form batsman Anthony Stones giving the visitors a fighting chance of victory.

Simon Bowes took 4-52 and Paul Theaker 3-40 for the home side.

Staithes were troubled by the tight bowling of Daley Wharton (3-30) and 4-62 from Adam Spaven, but Rich Heggarty’s unbeaten 72 saw the hosts home with just one wicket to spare.

Another thriller at Ebberston saw the hosts boost their battle against the drop with a three-wicket win against fourth-placed Kirkbymoorside.

Neil Eddon’s 87 proved to be the match-winning effort for the hosts, the youngster helping Ebberston past the Moorsiders’ 159-8.

Second-placed Flixton 2nds won by 49 runs in a low-scoring contest at home to Cayton, while Forge Valley defeated visitors Staxton by 44 runs, both results helping the victors keep the pressure on Heslerton.

In division A, relegation rivals Scalby and Sewerby battled it out in a game which saw the ball dominate, 19 wickets falling for just 182 runs, hosts Scalby edging home with the final pair at the crease.

Brompton stunned leaders Filey, the hosts winning by seven wickets thanks to a fine spell of bowling by Ian Atkinson.

The former Cloughton man claimed 6-38 as the visitors were all out for 104, although Filey had a fine 30 from Nathan Robson to thank for earning one batting point, as they were 25-5 at one stage.

Joe Bayes hit the highest score of the day with a powerful 135 for division C side Ravenscar at home to Cloughton 2nds, but unfortunately the rain brought play to a halt with the visitors 137-5 chasing the hosts’ 213-9.

The best bowling display of the day came from Cayton 2nds’ Simon Glave who took an outstanding 8-18 at home to Forge Valley 2nds in division B.

Glave helped skittle Valley for just 63, but with the hosts struggling on 34-4 in reply the wet weather wiped out all chance of further play.
