The Derwent Valley Cricket League has been rocked by the third resignation this month, division B club Sewerby 4ths the latest side to fall by the wayside.

Following Hunmanby’s resignation from division C last week and top-flight side Oriel folding earlier this month - and Staithes 2nds exit from the Beckett League division C - this is a worrying time for local cricket.

League secretary Bernard Goulding said: “More bad news for local cricket in that I have just received the resignation of Sewerby 4ths from the division B of the Derwent Valley Cricket League, leaving all teams in this division with two free Saturdays in the coming season when teams were due to play Sewerby 4ths.

“Sewerby 3rds/4ths have also conceded their Home Guard Sunday Cup game to Hospitals/Rugby Club CC due to be played on Sunday due to lack of players, with Hospitals/Rugby Club now due to play Sherburn 2nds at home in the second round.

“In the Welford Cup Kirkbymoorside 2nds now get a bye in the preliminary round and will now play Flixton 3rds at home in the first round.”
