The first cricket cup final of the season will be played on Wednesday evening at Staxton CC in the Atlas Ward Cup final, 6pm start.
Sean Pinder’s Forge Valley 3rds team will tackle Sherburn 2nds in the final of the competition, which is for division A teams in the Derwent Valley Cricket League.
Pinder has helped turn Valley into a formidable line-up this season, the all-rounder capable of taking plenty of wickets and match-winning batting performances.
They have dropped off the pace in the promotion battle in recent weeks due to players being unavailable, but should have a full squad for the cup final.
Pinder’s fellow ex-Commercial team-mate Eric Hall is an explosive batsman who can destroy the morale of a fielding team in a matter of a couple of overs, another former member of the successful Commercial team is all-rounder Leighton Bailey, who is a tidy slow bowler and a handy lower-order batsman.
Sherburn, who won the cup final in 2010, are a very young and enthusiastic team who should give the more experineced Valley team a good close game.
Both teams will be looking for good scores on the excellent Staxton cricket ground and hoping their bowlers can peg back scores to a reasonable level.
The cup is a 20 overs a side competition with no bowler allowed to bowl more than five overs.
Sherburn 2nds reached the final after beating Ebberston 2nds and Fylingdales 2nds while Forge Valley 3rds beat Muston and Heslerton 2nds on their way to the final.
The umpires for the final are Derek Hall and Les Johnson and the cups will be presented after the game by Nigel Pickard, the managing director of Atlas Ward Structures - the cup sponsors. The league are hoping a good crowd will attend this popular cup final.
