Athletic effectively made the game safe with a three-goal burst inside five minutes starting on 28 minutes when Zam Deans chased down what looked like a lost cause and his pinpoint cross eventually fell to Walmsley, who left the keeper with no chance.

The goal of the game followed minutes later when Nathan Vidler brilliantly cushioned a through-ball, turned and fed Simpson on the left, who crossed to the unmarked Walmsley, who smashed a volley in off the post to complete his hat-trick and put Athletic 3-0 up.

Nathan Vidler’s smart finish made it 4-0 shortly after.

Rangers got reward for their endeavour when pulling a goal back just before the interval.

The scoring was completed with 15 minutes left when a quick corner between George Bramham and Nathan Parker ended up at Deans’ feet and his cross to the back-post found Simpson, who smashed a half volley past the keeper.

Soon after the home side scored a second after nice wing play from Ted Broadbent to whip in a cross to Bevan Henry, who with his back to goal turned and scooped the ball into the back of the net.

Just before half-time Boro grabbed a third goal as Cameron MacDonald expertly bicycle-kicked over the defence for Kelly to race onto and calmly slot in his second.

MacDonald hit the fourth before Ashton Peterson smashed in a half-volley to cap an excellent display.
