Scarborough Athletic’s reserve team have confirmed their opponents for the double-header a week on Saturday at Scarborough RUFC as an ex-Hull City team which includes former Boro striker Dean Windass and Athletic assistant boss Darren France, despite the Scarborough Sunday League having been linked as potential opponents.
This first game of the double bill on Saturday July 27 - the second is a clash between a Scarborough Saturday League representative team and Boro’s first team - has been a talking point over the past few weeks, with Scalby having withdrawn from their meeting with Boro Reserves last week.
Boro chairman Dave Holland said: “This is not an ideal situation as we had to sort something out after Scalby’s late decision to pull out of the game.
“We had three or four possibilities for this friendly. Our treasurer Geoff Osguthorpe had introduced the idea to me as he is also on the Sunday League committee and I did agree that we should play against them but perhaps I was a bit too hasty in agreeing with this option.
“I am very sorry if I have upset anyone from the Scarborough Sunday League in choosing to play against the ex-Tigers team instead on Saturday July 27, but matches can often change when you are looking at pre-season friendlies.
“We had also been approached by Fishburn Park from the Teesside League and Old Malton from the York League premier division, but it seemed the Sunday league was a good option as were keen to forge links with the local community, but on reflection I have decided to go for the ex-Tigers option.
“The team is led by Peter Skipper and includes our assistant manager Darren France as well as ex-Boro striker Dean Windass as well as Paul Mudd and keeper Gavin Kelly, who both played for Scarborough FC.”
The game between Boro Reserves and the ex-Tigers will kick off at 1pm with the Boro v Saturday League game starting at 3pm.
Holland added: “I am eager to make this day a festival of football and I think the ex-Tigers can help make it a good day. We have the mayor coming down and quite a few ex-Boro players so it should be a great day.”
The full ex-Tigers squad is: Gavin Kelly, Rob Dewhurst, Justin Whittle, Peter Skipper, Tim Hotte, Ian Ashbee, Dean Windass, Mike Smith, Adam Lowthorpe, Paul Mudd, Stuart Mackenzie, Tony Dobson, Andy Saville and Darren France.
