Almost 60 youngsters from the Scarborough area turned out to try and impress at Scarborough Athletic FC’s youth trials day.

Boro have entered two sides into the Hull Boys’ Sunday League next season, at under-12 and under-16 level, and recruited Nigel Carson as head of the club’s youth development.

Carson, alongside under-16s manager Eric Richardson and coach Ian Wilson, ran the rule over the cream of the local talent for the under-16s side on Saturday morning at George Pindar Sports College.

In the afternoon it was the turn of the under-12s to impress, with manager Phil Wallace and coaches Giulio Armellei and former Scarborough FC and Pickering Town keeper Kevin Martin looking on alongside Carson.

Boro manager Rudy Funk and Football Director Tony Brown were also in attendance to take a look at youngsters hoping to make it into the squads for next season - with many hoping they will one day make the first team grade.

Carson said: “It was pleasing to see so many youngsters come out to trial for the two sides, and the quality of the players was of a high level.

“The future of the sport in Scarborough looks bright with these players coming through.

“It was good to get all the coaches together on the day as well, and the enthusiasm they all have is certainly going to rub off on the players next season.

“It was great to see Rudy Funk at the trials as well, and I am sure some of the boys tried extra hard to impress the first team manager. One day hopefully they will get a chance to play for his team.”

The managers and coaches will now sit down to discuss which players will make the squads for the season, before informing those who are successful.

However, the opportunities aren’t closed for other players, and all enquires regarding the club’s youth set-up should be directed via email at nigel@scarboroughathletic.com

The club would like to say thanks to George Pindar Sports College for the use of the school playing field for the day to hold the trials, and to all players and parents who attended.
