Cool hand Luke nets derby-day double
ALL the goals came in the second half as Trafalgar beat Trafalgar Reserves 4-1 in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Traf Reserves battled hard in the first half to keep the game at 0-0 but the first team took the lead early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty, which Luke Jenkinson converted.
Following that opener, the first team started to pile on the pressure and were 2-0 up when Wayne Aziz found the back of the net.
A second penalty of the day saw Traf go 3-0 up, once again Jenkinson sticking the spot-kick home after James Moody handled in the box.
Midfield ace Dean Craig added a fourth for Liam Salt’s charges.
And although the Reserves pulled a goal back through player-boss John Wood with 10 minutes remaining it was too little too late for his team.
Wood said: “It was a great effort from the lads and they put in a good shift. I thought we were holding our own until that first penalty went in but that changed the game completely.
“After that we were chasing the game and it is never going to be easy against them because they have some very good players right through the side.”
Newlands also booked their place in the semi-finals with a 6-2 victory over Victoria in a game in which Newlands ace Eric Hall fired in a hat-trick.
Victoria went a goal ahead through Mikey Anderson before Hall levelled matters for Newlands.
Anderson was on hand again to see Victoria go 2-1 up at half-time.
The second half belonged to Newlands though, Hall netting the equaliser before making it 3-2 with his hat-trick strike.
Goals from Ben Luntley, Ryan Cooper and Billy Logan wrapped things up for Newlands.
Victoria goalkeeper Rich Curtis had a fine game despite the result and even saved a penalty from Josh Hakings.
Newlands club official Hughie Brown said: “It was not the best performance from the team especially in the first half.
“Saying that we took our chances in the second half and their keeper had an excellent game.”
