Scarborough Athletic produced a five-star display in their opening outing of pre-season on Saturday.

Rudy Funk’s squad stunned Saturday League side Eastfield by firing home five goals without reply at a packed Yorkshire Coast College.

Buoyed by the additions of seven new players, Boro hit top form in the sun, though it wasn’t all plain sailing.

Eastfield matched their opponents for the first 15 minutes of the match, creating a number of good opportunities.

The best fell to former Pickering striker Liam Salt, who rose well in the box, but headed just wide.

Boro also looked lively in attack though, with ex-Brid man James Bennett being released on goal, but his effort skewed wide.

With 17 minutes on the clock, the deadline was finally broken, as Paddy Miller’s glorious cross from the left picked out Tony Hackworth, who carressed the ball into the back of the net.

New boy Ollie Ryan almost doubled the advantage in the following moments, but his angled shot flew just past the post.

Eastfield went closer though, with Ady Blake nodding wide and Liam Salt smashing into the side netting after a melee in the box.

Boro continue to look sharp though, with Ryan poking a Tony Hackworth flick high and wide, Robbie Hawkes also went close, drilling just wide of the target after a neat trick on the edge of the box.

This proved to be a sighter for Hawkes, who got it right minutes later. The former Brid man collected 35 yards from goal, beat his man and then picked out the top corner of Eastfield’s net with a delicious strike.

It is said that before and after the half-time break are the perfect times to score. Hawkes goal did the former and a swift effort from sub Chris Hewitt the latter to make it 3-0.

A scramble broke out in the box after Tom Adams’ header was cleared off the line. The ball broke to Hewitt and he calmly side-footed into the top corner.

Boro booked their fourth 10 minutes later, as Bennett cleverly slotted Ryan through on keeper Sam Marson and the striker made no mistake.

Athletic wrapped up the scoring on the hour, when Law used his pace to break three and roll home from a tight angle.

The rampant Boro side would have added further to their tally in the final half hour but for some fine keeping from Marson and some wayward finishing.

Adams saw his header brilliantly saved, Law’s effort was cleared off the line and Ryan Blott guided two efforts wide of the target.

Boro had comfortably done enough though to kick off their preparatory work in solid style.
