Rudy Funk was still happy with his Scarborough Athletic players, despite their 1-0 FA Cup exit at Spennymoor Town on Saturday.

Boro slipped to a 1-0 defeat at last season’s Northern League champions, but they did have chances of their own that could have pushed them beyond the Extra Preliminary round of the competition.

Funk said: “We have enjoyed our trip to Spennymoor, an established side who have dominated the Northern League for a few years.

“I have to say well done to our lads, it was a good peformance, but we just didn’t get the result we wanted.

“You have to focus on Matty Plummer and Andy Milne at the back for us because they had great games against two very gifted Spennymoor attackers.

“Every one of our lads did well though and the good football continued. It is still very early in the season, but we are playing some great stuff.

“I spoke to their manager after the game and he was full of praise for us, which does give you plenty of positives.”

After the cup exit boss Funk is now focusing his attentions back on a league table, which Boro currently head after two matches.

He added: “Cup runs are great, but at times they can be something of a distraction from the league, which is what we are looking at this season.

“We do have plenty of strength in our squad, so you can change things around after defeats like this.

“It is still very early in the season and there is a lot of hard work for us all to do. It is just important that we keep on improving with every week that passes.”
