Scarborough News Sunday League division one title-chasers Newlands won 3-1 at second division Ayton to book their place in the Scarborough & District FA Sunday Cup final against either Trafalgar or Itis Itis.

The visitors opened the scoring on five minutes when a great team move led to Jamie Gallagher closing down an Ayton defender, and his clearance fired back into Gallagher and past the Ayton keeper to put Newlands in front.

Drew McCoubrey doubled the lead from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark.

Ayton started strong after the interval and were the better team for the first 20 minutes of the secodn half, and in the 65th minute they gained their reward when Tyson Stubbings’ half-volley - his 20th of the season for the villagers - halved the deficit, the striker netting after collecting an excellent through-ball from centre-back Stuart Wilson.

Newlands eased their nerves five minutes later, McCoubrey running onto a loose ball after a long throw and smashing in a half-volley from 12 yards to put the away side into the cup final.

Ayton boss Mark Plumpton gave his team’s man of the match award to the whole side for a great effort, while Leigh Watson and Matty Griffiths shared the star man award for Newlands for their strong centre-back partnership.
