Paul Foot: It’s time to prepare for next season

It has become clear over the past few months that we have plenty of things to work on.

When you look at the mistakes we have been making, it just suggests that we are missing a bit of age and experience.

When we look at next season we know exactly what we need - an improvement to the spine of the team.

With Joe Cracknell’s loan expiring at the end of the season, we will need a new keeper, a commanding centre-half, a sitting midfielder and also another goalscorer, who could chip in for us.

When you look at the signings we have made so far since we took over, each of the players have come from the leagues above us, we think that is important.

I have my contacts at North Ferriby and Harrogate Town through Simon Weaver, while Bryan (Hughes) has his across the game as well.

So we will be working with these to strengthen in the areas that we need to .

We will obviously be looking at the players we have as well.

While we have been in charge I had singled out a few players that I wouldn’t be keen to keep next season, but since then they have gone on and dug in to prove themselves.

It is down to the players we have with us now to realise that they might have to spend some time on the bench. It will be down to their attitude after.

Over the next few weeks I’ll have a sit down with Bryan because as joint-managers we have to work things out between us.

There will be some players that I might want to release and Bryan might want to keep, and vice versa.

In football it is a case when you meet the manager and then it comes down to the option or staying or leaving.

There are still two games to play before all that happens though.

And that is a good test of what we are trying to instill in the lads because we want them to go out there and win every game.

If they do that, be it pre-season or a league game, then it gives you good habits.

You need those winning habits if you are going to progress as a club.
