West Pier got their season off to the perfect start with a 7-1 win against Ryedale in the first-ever Kitty Cook Memorial Trophy match at the Pickering club’s ground.
Tommy Barker and Paul Provins scored two goals apiece, while Mark Tucker, Mike Hartnett and James Temple were also on target for the victors in the game played in memory of Kitty, who was a long-serving, and very hard-working member of the Scarborough News Saturday League committee.
The game will be played before the start of every season between the League Cup winners and the division one champions.
League secretary Geoff Nellist said: “It was a good game, especially considering the weather was so poor. But the wind and the rain failed to spoil the atmosphere and it was good to see Mitch Cook - Kitty’s son - and many other family members there to help make the first-ever memorial match a great event.”
