RUDY FUNK: Falcao deal needs to work for United

Though very rarely do you see a player jump straight into any team and make an immediate impact.

That could be something that Falcao will have to do after he made the big-money loan move to Old Trafford on deadline day.

I can sympathise with Louis Van Gaal because he wants his own people at the club and he also wants immediate results.

You would never have found Sir Alex Ferguson doing what Van Gaal has done though. He signed players, but only at the right time.

During Ferguson’s reign the focus was on home-grown talent, but you don’t see much of that now.

There would have been no rash decisions made.

Falcao’s signing looks to be a little rash, as Van Gaal tries to get things right by hook or by crook.

If you look at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho targetted Diego Costa and what a target he was since he signed.

I also think Arsene Wenger will be rubbing his hands together at Arsenal after signing Danny Welbeck.

Welbeck will have a field day with all that creativity.

United have always been one of the biggest clubs in the country, I’d love to see them stay there and return to the Champions League and challenge for honours.

At the moment though they seem to have lost some of their old ethos of being a close-knit family club.

Gone are the days when David Beckham, Gary Neville and the rest pulled on the famous red shirt.

When you make so many changes in quick succession it takes time and sometimes doesn’t work at all.

When it comes to money and finance in football I tend to take a back-seat, though I have heard that Falcao is on astronmical money.

The big price means that you have to deliver and gives you more pressure.

At the same time, no fan would criticise his wage if he starts with a bang and scores a load of goals.

So be it as long as it works for them.
