Saturday League: Ryedale boost survival hopes by sinking rivals Ayton

Ryedale Sports Club boosted their chances of avoiding the drop from Scarborough News Saturday League division one with a 9-0 home win against fellow strugglers Ayton in one of only four games to survive the wintry weather.

The Pickering-based club opened the scoring through Danny Meade and Chris Rhodes doubled the lead with a shot from 20 yards.

Martin Foxton made sure of the win with a third for Ryedale, breaking quickly before slotting his shot past the Ayton keeper.

More good play from Ryedale led to skipper Sam Turnbull making it 4-0 and the next goal came from a good setpiece, with man of the match Meade making no mistake.

Rhodes’ second was the goal of the game, as he curled his shot in from 25 yards, then Jack Hall made it 7-0 with a tap-in.

Foxton completed his hat-trick with a late double, both of his efforts being headers.

Whitby Fisherman’s Society took a step closer to safety with a shock 3-1 home win against third-placed Westover Wasps.

The visitors had the strong wind at their backs in the opening 45 minutes and took the lead through Mark Wade after a fine assist from Curtis Rose.

The Wasps also hit the post and the bar as they piled on the pressure before half-time, but the Whitby side levelled before half-time through a neat finish from Neil Hart.

After the break, the hosts took full advantage of the wind at their backs, Steven Ross putting the Fiushermen ahead with a header and his brother Mark Ross sealing the win with a fine strike.

Ryan Braithwaite was named as the Fisherman’s man of the match with a strong display at centre-back, while Rose was the star man for Wasps with a tireless display.

Sherburn turned on the style in a 5-0 home win against Scalby Reserves in division three.

Matty Pickard opened the scoring for the hosts with a fine strike as Sherburn led 1-0 at the half-time break.

Pickard doubled Sherburn’s lead after the interval and a 20-yard free-kick from Steve Parker sealed the win for Andy Adamson’s troops.

Hot-shot Pickard completed his hat-trick and then 10 minutes from time Matt Whitehall capped a fine display with a fierce strike to make it 5-0.

Liam Scott was named as man of the match for a hard-working display for Sherburn in midfield.

Eastway Sports claimed a fine 3-1 home win against Sleights Reserves.

Mark Craven’s double strike put the hosts in charge at the half-time break.

The villagers fought back with a goal, but John Crayston restored Eastway’s two-goal lead and secured the three-point haul for Barton Newham’s team.
