West Pier manager Andy Spivey has hailed his squad’s all-round effort to secure their second Scarborough News Saturday League title win in as many seasons, which was secured on Monday night after second-placed Filey Town’s 3-2 loss at Whitby Fishermen’s.
Spivey said: “I am absolutely delighted. It has been a very, very long season. At the start of season we had a lot of changes in personnel from the season before and we worked incredibly hard as a team to keep ourselves in the hunt.
“All credit to the new players such as Jon Hyde, Mark Oldroyd and Phil Meads who came in and all of them have done a fantastic job. The key to our success is having a great defensive line-up and James Wardle and Sam Hyde have been outstanding all season long with Steve and Andy Sheader and Mark Tucker all playing their part.
“In midfield Daz Crawford, Ronnie Lamb and Danny Cooper were very important in the early part of the season when we were short of numbers and during that period Mikey Barker and Mikey Hartnett scored important goals at important times.”
Spivey added: “In the run-in we had Paul Provins, Tommy Barker and Will Jenkinson all returning from injury at what proved to be a crucial time and after Christmas Martin Cooper and Gaz Thomas returned to the club.
“We also had important contributions from Neil Thomas, Jamie Bradshaw, Bobby Penny, Gareth Sygrove and young Kyle Spivey.
“Really everyone played their part in what I consider to be our third but best title win to date. Add to that the NRCFA Saturday Challenge Cup win it has been a truly amazing season.”
Pier complete their fixtures against Eastfield on Wednesday evening, when they will be presented with their silverware.
