Twenty five pairs took part in the Eastfield BC drawn merit competition which saw some fine weather and some excellent play.

The event was sponsored by Eastfield veteran Ollie Nendick and run by Kevin Garside and club members.

In the quarter-finals Whitby pair Steve Dover and Peter Linford beat Phil Todd (Hunmanby) and Geoff Watson (Whitby) 21-18 and Terry Summersgill (Borough) and Tim Purcell (Robin Hood’s Bay) beat Penny Gosling (Borough) and Lee Deighton (Dukes Park) 21-19.

Also in the quarters Andy Deighton (Dukes Park) and Frank Povey (Hunmanby) beat David Bould (North Cliff) and Mick Gates (Borough) 21-8 while Kevin Gates (Whitby) and Barry Watson (Borough) beat Jan Hadden (Borough) and John Holmes 21-13.

Deighton and Povey went on to beat Gates and Walker 21-13 in the semis while Dover and Linford beat Summersgill and Purcell 21-18.

The final got underway with Deighton/Povey taking the first two ends for a 4-0 lead, with Dover/Linford then getting into their stride and taking a 6-5 lead.

Things looked good for Deighton/Povey when they went 13-6 ahead, but Dover/Linford fought back with a good run to take a 19-18 lead after 20 ends’ play.

But in never-say-die fashion Deighton, one of the area’s outstanding players, and talented veteran Povey grabbed the last two ends for a 21-19 victory.

A popular mixed doubles merit will be staged by Hunmanby BC on Sunday, 9.30am start.
