The area’s sporting achievments will be recognised at the 2014 Scarborough & District Sports Awards next Monday night.

The annual awards night, to be held again in the Ocean Room at the iconic Scarborough Spa, recognises the district’s sporting stars, coaches and volunteers every year.

Commonwealth Games medallist and 2016 Olympic Games hopeful Gareth Mills will be the guest of honour and will present the awards on the night, and Scarborough & District Sports Council’s sports development officer and event organiser Matt Hewison is delighted that Mills will be there.

Hewison said: “It is brilliant that Gareth Mills is joining us on the night to hand out the awards and meet all the winners.

“If his achievements in the pool can inspire our area’s youngsters to take up sport or push themselves then that is fantastic.”

Hewison is happy with the standard of the nominations for this year’s awards ceremony and is excited to see the achievements of those nominated recognised on the night.

He added: “It is a great list of nominations this year with some real talent on there.

“It was obviously tough for the committee to separate some of the winners and congratulations has to go to all those who received nominations.

“It is tricky every year, but testament to the talent we have in the area that it is so tough to pick winners.”

The council’s AGM will be held prior to the ceremony at 6.30pm, with the first awards set to be dished out at 7pm on the night.

Hewison is hoping for a bumper turnout on the night to recognise the achievements of those nominated.

He added: “It would be great to see a big turnout on the night.

“It already means a lot to the winners, especially the younger ones, but if there is a lot of people there on the night it just helps make it extra special.”
