Bland and Binns net Cliff honours

THIRTY-TWO pairs of bowlers took part in North Cliff BC’s Under and Over-65s Merit competition on Sunday, starting in fine weather but ending in heavy rain.

Richard Thompson and his wife Dot ran the competition which was sponsored by Stuart and Karen Nielson, of the North Riding Hotel.

Play started on a fast running green which slowed when the rain arrived.

In the quarter-finals Whitby’s Jo and Ray Leeman beat North Cliff’s Tim Coyne and Derrick Swift 21-20, Geoff Watson (Whitby) and Tom Chalmers (N Cliff) beat Ian Hadden (Eastfield) and Jeff Heaton (Hunmanby) 21-14, Ian Richardson (Whitby) and Terry Summersgill (Borough) beat Kevin Gates (Whitby) and Richard Thompson (N Cliff) 21-19 and Borough’s Tony Bland and Jack Binns beat Whitby’s Alan Landers and Tom Mottram 21-16.

Watson and Chalmers beat the Leemans 21-11 in the semi-finals while Bland and Binns beat Richardson and Summersgill 21-11. Bland and Binns took the final honours with a 21-18 result against Watson and Chalmers.

Bridlington Bay BC will stage its popular Mr and Mrs Doubles Merit competition on Sunday, 9.30am start.
