A HOST of respected boxing pundits have been quick to praise Scarborough cruiserweight Danny Price after his impressive points win over durable Bulgarian Tayar Mehmed in LIverpool on Saturday night.
Price produced a polished and effective performance behind his accurate left jab to take a 40-35 victory at Liverpool Olympia on the undercard of David Price’s brutal first round knockout of John McDermott.
And the pundits covering the evening’s bouts for Sky Sports were suitably impressed with Price’s performance, predicting a bright future for the former Westway ABC man.
Johnny Nelson, who was WBO cruiserweight champion for over six years, said: “This young fella hasn’t had the springboard of any Olympic success behind him, so I think he’s tried to slip under the radar a little bit.
“Unfortunately the secret is out so therefore he’s got to do it the hard way.
“He’s got to test himself on every level coming through.”
Also ringside for Sky was former IBF cruiserweight champion Glenn McCrory, who was also impressed by Price, mapping out a glittering future for the Scarborough man.
Discussing the future of the two Price fighters, Danny and David, McCrory said: “I think he’s (Danny) another Price who’s going to make a name for himself.
“I think he’s got the talent, I think he’s got the variety. I think he showed that against Mehmed.
“He doesn’t often get put on the floor, it was a lovely right uppercut.
“In the past I’ve been impressed with his jab. Little bit by little bit he’s getting it right.
“I think he’s going to be the star of the cruiserweight division.
“It’s a little bit of a weak division at the moment but I think he’s going to be the stand-out name in the future.”
