Volunteers from local crown green bowling clubs are again running the Scarborough Council sponsored Gambart Baines Challenge Cup competition.

This year’s competition started on Bank Holiday Monday with entries down to just 21 due to competition from the numerous Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration events.

The winner was Geoff Watson, of Whitby Bowling Club, who beat Rob Lloyd, of Castleford, 21-18 in a close, exciting final. This was probably the only qualifying round that Watson could enter all season because of his work.

Throughout the season this prestigious competition attracts some of the country’s top players striving to carry off the first prize of £1,000. The runner-up receives £500 and each qualifier for the grand finals on Saturday October 6 receives at least £40.

Another qualifying round will be held on the Alexandra Gardens greens today and rounds will continue each Thursday to September 27, with an additional qualifier on Bank Holiday Monday August 27. Play starts at 10am with 10.45am as scratching time at the discretion of the organisers.
