Encouraged by a forecast which promised - and delivered - glorious sunny though cool weather, 33 crown green bowlers took part in a singles merit competition at Eastfield BC on Sunday.
In the quarter-finals North Cliff’s Derrick Swift beat Dukes Park’s David Lowe 21-20, while Kevin Gates (Whitby) beat David West (Dukes Park) 21-18, Billy Holdsworth (Dukes Park) beat Mick Hill (Eastfield) 21-6 and Geoff Watson (Whitby) beat clubmate Jo Leeman 21-14.
In the semi-finals Swift beat Gates 21-15 while Holdsworth beat Watson 21-11. Holdsworth went on to beat Swift 21-12 in the final.
The Eastfield green has proved to be a profitable one for Holdsworth as he also won the prestigious Scarborough district association’s singles merit on that turf in September.
Sixteen early losers also entered a consolation tea-and-biscuits competition. Winning through the quarter-finals were Lee Tankard (Robin Hood’s Bay), who beat Eastfield’s Arthur Wilks 21-16, Harry Old (Hunmanby), who beat Mick Gates (Borough) 21-11, Ed McCormack (North Cliff), who beat clubmate Colin Burns 21-14, and Dave Clark, who beat Steve Dover (Whitby) 21-13.
In the semis Old beat Tankard 21-11 while Clark beat McCormack 21-16. Clark then beat Old 21-14 in the final.
There will be a pairs competition at Dukes Park BC, on Sunday, 9am start.
Remaining merit competitions for 2012, all singles, are: Sunday December 2, Westgate BC; Dec 9, Hunmanby BC; Dec 16 North Cliff BC and Dec 30 Borough BC.
The traditional break for Christmas means there will be no competition on December 23.
