Former world champion Paul Ingle has pleaded with the people of Scarborough to support cruiserweight prospect Danny Price ahead of his homecoming fight at The Spa Grand Hall next month.
Price will fight in the town for the first time since 2001 when he tops a five-fight card on Saturday May 11, and Ingle has urged the people who supported him during his glittering career that included winning the IBF featherweight strap in 1999, to get behind Price in the same manner now.
Ingle said: “We need to get the people of Scarborough to support Dan. Support Danny like you supported me.
“He’s a Scarborough lad born and bred and he’s going to win titles, so the town needs to get behind him. “
Ingle remembers his fight against Rakhim Mingaleyev in 1998 well, and he is hoping for a repeat of that atmosphere come May 11.
He added: “The atmosphere down here was absolutely electric.
“You’re fighting for Scarborough and fighting in Scarborough.
“It’s what Scarborough needs. The football has gone out of town now.
“Danny has all the ability he just needs the belief now and we can get a world title out of him.”
Price is hoping for a full house and a raucous crowd for a fight that has been dubbed ‘Homecoming’.
He added: “I remember watching Paul when I was younger and the atmosphere his fans made was great.
“If I can get half of that support then I’ll be delighted.”
Tickets went on sale for the show on Monday morning and the Spa’s events and marketing manager Stewart Ward is delighted that professional boxing is coming back to the venue.
Ward said: “We’re delighted that boxing is coming back to The Spa.
“I’m pleased Danny is coming back to Scarborough to fight in his hometown and I’m sure boxing fans in the town will get behind him and come down on the night.
“It’s great news for the venue and it’s something I’m hopeful we’ll be able to repeat after this first show on May 11.”
