Kingfishers earn Masters success

Masters swimmers from all over Yorkshire arrived at Scarborough’s Indoor Pool for the annual Open Masters event organised by Yorkshire Swimming Association.

For the first time, hosts Kingfishers SC were represented by 20 swimmers, 10 women and 10 men. Kingfishers Masters Swimming was formed approximately five months ago and is coached by club head coach Juan Carlos Lino, from Bolivia.

Many of the team were swimming for the first time in a competition.

Kingfishers made their mark on the event, achieving 28 medals and 11 fourth places.

Stewart Rowe (50/54yrs) took gold in the 200m freestyle (2:24:57), 100m freestyle (1:03:42) and 50m freestyle (28:72). He also achieved a bronze in the 50m butterfly (33:72).

Jon Cheshire (40/44yrs) earned gold in the 100m breaststroke (1:16:61) and a silver in the 50m breaststroke (33:99).

Tamra Blanchard also achieved silver in the 50m breaststroke (44:07) and bronze in 100m breaststroke (1:38:29).

Richard Thraves (45/49yrs) won silver in the 100m freestyle (1:03:03) and a bronze in the 50m freestyle (28:33), also achieving a fifth place in the 50m butterfly (33:18).

Richard Priestley (35/39yrs) took silver in the 50m freestyle (31:05).

Bronze medals went to David Marshall (50/54yrs) in 50m breaststroke (40:21) and 100m breaststroke (1:32:63), he also achieved fourth place in the 50m freestyle (31:31).

The ladies did well with bronze medals going to Jane Sedman (40/49yrs) in the 50m breaststroke (51:83) and 100m breaststroke (1:53:93) also managing a fourth in backstroke (1:15:83) – Sedman is part of the Kingfishers Channel relay team.

Ruth Lino (50/54yrs) is the sister of the head coach, and she also joined the team,

She achieved a bronze in the 50m backstroke (42:88), the 50m breaststroke (49:06) and 100m individual medley (1:34:12).

Kevin Moment (40/44yrs) gained a bronze in the 200m freestyle (2:40:05) and Kath Minghella (45/49yrs) achieved a bronze in the 50m freestyle.

Jane Hamp (55/59yrs) also earned a bronze in the 50m breaststroke (52:07).

Team events also saw the hosts achieve a gold medal in the women’s 180yrs + 100m freestyle, there were three silvers in men’s 180yrs+ 100m freestyle, 180yrs + womens medley relay and men’s medley relay teams.

Two bronze medals went to a second 180yrs+ women’s medley relay team and men’s 140yrs + 100m freestyle team.

Relay teams included some of the medal winners and many who just missed medal places in individual events, these included Sarah Forsyth, Jeannette Richards, Heather Franklin, Andy Cornforth, Carly Atkinson, Richard Witty, Darren Todd and Karen Webster.

Some of the Kingfisher Masters squad will be attending another meeting in Durham at the end of June.
