A local amateur rider is preparing for the biggest race of her life in a unique fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Lorna Harrison, 39, is among 12 amateur riders signed up for the Macmillan Charity Race at York Racecourse, where she will ride a horse trained by legendary Malton-based trainer Brian Ellison.

Harrison, a former point-to-point jockey who lives in Silpho, said: “It’s been great working with Brian in Malton.

“We haven’t decided on a horse yet, but I’m sure whichever horse I ride it’ll be great.”

The riders were given expert tuition and had their fitness and riding ability assessed at the Northern Racing College in Doncaster in April.

A further group training day followed at York Racecourse on May 6.

Both days were carried out under the watchful eye of former champion jockey Kevin Darley.

The jockeys have had to meet rigorous standards of fitness and Lorna has been riding out for trainer Ellison in Malton since November 2014 in preparation for the race.

All the riders have pledged to raise at least £2,500 for Macmillan and Lorna has set herself a fundraising target of £8,000.

Lorna said: “Riding the legendary Knavesmire in front of such a large crowd will be an incredible experience.

“I’m really looking forward to taking part and want to raise as much money as possible for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity which does so much to help people affected by cancer.”

The Macmillan Charity Race takes place on Saturday June 13.

It will be the finale of Macmillan Charity Raceday, which features a full card of professional racing alongside charity lunches, auctions, raffles and collections all helping raise money for Macmillan and other charitable causes.

Last year, Macmillan Charity Raceday attracted a crowd of more than 28,000 people who helped raise £365,000.

Riders in the charity race will be hoping to better the figure raised by the class of 2014, who brought in more than £90,000.

Lorna has been overwhelmed by people’s generosity and would like to thank everyone who has contributed to her fundraising.

A Macmillan Pleasure Ride is being held on Monday May 25 at North Farm, Silpho, Scarborough.

Lorna would like as many riders as possible to saddle up for charity, to book a place please contact lornsharrison@gmail.com.
