THERE was some excellent bowling when 36 pairs entered the East Yorkshire Doubles Merit played at Westgate Bowling Club, on Sunday, with only one game finishing with a margin of more than three points in the six preliminary rounds.

Two games finished 21-20, two 21-19 and one 21-18.

North Cliff BC partnership Tom Chalmers and Derek Swift, regularly seen in the closing stages of doubles competitions, went out early to Dukes Park’s Dennis O’Neill and Ron Marshall 21-18.

Other close games included that of Alan Landers and Steve Dover (Whitby), beaten 21-20 by Hunmanby’s Phil Todd and Pete Richards, Tom Mottram (Whitby) and Dave Wilson (Westgate), who beat Ken Antcliffe and Harold Hill (Dukes Park) 21-20, and Ed McCormack (North Cliff) and Terry Summersgill (Borough) who lost 21-19 to Ken and Doreen Hinchcliffe( Dukes Park).

Andy Deighton and Chris Bielby (Dukes Park) had a surprising 21-15 defeat in the quarter-final at the hands of Andy’s nephew Lee Deighton (Dukes Park) and Tommy Donald (Westgate), but the victors then lost 21-10 to Kevin Garside and Mick Dawson (Eastfield) in the quarter-finals.

Also in the quarters Marshall and O’Neill lost 21-9 to Richards and Todd, Jackie Stapleton and Ian Mott (Dukes Park) beat Mottram and Wilson 21-12, while David Lowe (Dukes Park) and Kevin Gates (Whitby) beat Pat Germaine (North Cliff) and David Bould (Eastfield) 21-5.

The semis saw Richards and Todd beat Garside and Dawson 21-11 while Stapleton and Mott lost 21-16 to Gates and Lowe.

It was a fitting final to a great day’s competition.

At the 10th end it was 12-11 to Todd and Richards who pulled ahead to 18-13 at the 16th end.

Lowe and Gates then took command, however, and after levelling the scores at 19-all scored two to earn a well deserved win.

Westgate president Peter Hellawell presented the prizes and thanked the measurers and markers and the ladies who provided refreshments throughout the day.

The Eastfield BC Over-60s Doubles Merit is being played today and the North Cliff Under- and Over-65s Merit will be played on Sunday, 10am start.

l Neil Woods (Snr), from Leeds, beat Joseph Cranston (Crossgates) 21-8 to become the latest qualifier in the Gambart Baines Challenge Cup.
