January has seen both the best and worst of shore angling, at its worst nothing has been coming to the scales for weighing in, at its best some quality bags have been caught.
The top spot by far in January has been Cloughton, with good conditions it has produced on nearly every occasion with both quality fish and big bags.
Burniston has also done well with some nice fish, hopefully the fish will stay around until the spring.
One of the best days was on Saturday, when South Cliff Angling Club held a members only match with £500 up for grabs.
Twenty hardy anglers braved a cutting easterly wind in search of the heaviest fish, the eventual winner was Paul Medd with a nice cod of eight pound two ounces.
But nearly every angler caught and there was a good smattering of six pound cod.
It also has to be noted that there was also some good bags of cod up to 25lb with the majority of the fish coming from the Cloughton area.
A bit further afield the lower half of the Holderness Coast has started to throw some fish out with a number of doubles reported to date.
Local angler Ian Thompson continued his recent good run of form by taking third spot in the Amble Open on the Northumbrian coast.
Thompson also had the heaviest fish with a cod of just under 12lb, this was no mean feat for him as he was only beaten by two shore anglers with international experience fishing for their country.
This Sunday see the popular inter-club Bell Trophy, arranged by the Rock Anglers Society.
All anglers have to meet outside the Oasis Cafe by 8.30am, entry is £3 per team.
Club sweeps to be arranged by the individual clubs.
Last year’s winners Filey will be hoping to retain their crown.
The match, fished over low water, should, with the right conditions, produce an excellent result.
