News that the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire will race into Scarborough in 2015 has been met with widespread approval by the town’s sporting community.

Following the last-gasp disappointment when Scarborough missed out on hosting a stage of the prestigious Tour de France Grand Depart in 2014, Scarborough Borough Council moved quickly to cough up the £135,000 to bring the first Tour de Yorkshire event to the coast.

Matt Hewison, sports development officer for the Scarborough & District Sports Council is certainly hoping the event will increase participation in sport in the area.

Hewison said: “I think everyone involved in cycling was disappointing to miss out on the Grand Depart last summer, so the news that the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire is going to be coming to Scarborough is fantastic.

“It will hopefully provide people with the opportunity to see some of the world’s top riders and also raise awareness of the sport to increase participation in local clubs and events.”

Paragon Cycling Club press officer Graham Varley echoed Hewison’s sentiments.

He said: “The decision to host a stage in Scarborough is a big opportunity to showcase the region and the sport of cycling.

“It is hoped that people will come out to support the event and with live national TV coverage as well it will create a lot of interest that should encourage more people to take up or want to further their cycling interest.

“There is now a thriving local club scene following the successes of British riders in the Olympics and the Tour de France and Scarborough Paragon is keen to encourage new members and especially more youngsters into the sport.

“This event should hopefully act as a platform to get them involved.”
