THE first of the 2012 season summer merit competitions, the popular Whitby drawn triples, was staged on Borough BC’s Manor Road green on a fine, sunny Sunday, and attracted 48 players.
Borough stepped in to host the competition after the Whitby clubhouse had been badly damaged by fire caused by intruders.
Play started with round-robin stages in four group with the winners going forward to the knock-out stage, and these progressed to the semi-finals where Steve Bell (Borough), Tim Purcell and Sue Green (both Robin Hood’s Bay) beat Steve Dover (Whitby), Robert Child (North Cliff) and Barry Gosling (Borough) 21-9 while Jo Leeman, Ken Wale (both Whitby) and Tony Bland (Borough) beat Kevin Garside (Eastfield), Tom Mottram (Whitby) and Rita Bland (Borough) 21-9.
The final could have gone either way but finished with Bell, Purcell and Green beating Leeman, Wale and Bland 21-16.
Organiser Geoff Watson presented the prizes and thanked Borough for generously staging the competition.
Whitby BC will stage the rest of its merit competitions on its home green throughout the summer and is now in a position to be able to cater for refreshments as usual.
On Sunday there will be a drawn pairs competition at Eastfield BC, 9.30am start, with a mixed doubles merit at Hunmanby BC to follow on April 8, again 9.30am start.
