THE superb surface of the North Cliff green put players to the test in the finals of the Scarborough CGBA Rosebowl Doubles competition.

Thirty-two players from eight clubs in association membership took part, having qualified for the finals in knockout competitions at their own clubs.

In the semi-finals Dukes Park’s Chris Bielby and Andy Deighton recovered from 15-3 in arrears to win 21-19 against Hunmanby’s Phil Todd and Pete Richards.

In the other last four clash Whitby’s Geoff Watson and Kevin Gates beat Hunmanby’s Peter Thompson and Lisa Watson 21-15.

Watson and Gates established a 15-7 lead in the final, only for Bielby and Deighton - last year’s winners - to fight back to 15-15.

The Whitby pair held their nerve, however, and ran out 21-15 winners.

Association president Robert Child expressed thanks to all who had helped run the finals, especially competitions secretary Jackie Stapleton, and Cliff’s Patrick Germaine and Ed McCormack for the excellent condition of the green.
