Scarborough got off to a shaky start when Bishop Auckland scored in the first half and converted to go 7-0 up.

But Mel Halstead came back with a penalty under the posts not long after.

The new look side from Silver Royd struggled to pull together as a team in the first half and a few mistakes led to another Bishop try just before the half-time whistle, the away side going into the second half 12-3 behind.

Bray’s side came back much stronger after the break and worked together as a unit in the second half.

Better communication and a solid defence saw Scarborough force the home side into handling errors and mistakes at the break down, turning the ball over time and again and keeping possession.

The Valkyries were making better use of the ball with runs from inside-centre Aisling Robinson, flanker Casey Jordan, outside centre Jess Glanvill and full-back Halstead.

An inexperienced forward pack put Scarborough under pressure in the scrums, but they still excelled in the line-outs, turning the ball over at several of Bishops throws.

A more confident Scarborough side dominated the second half and two tries from Halstead took them one point ahead with 10 minutes left and the away side managed to hold out for the win.

Joint player of the match Jordan had a brilliant game at flanker, putting in a fearless performance, while Glanvill’s work-rate shone through as well.

Bishop voted number-eight Claire Wilkinson as their forward of the match for consistent hard work and Halstead was the star back.

The Valkyries host Bradford Salem at Silver Royd in their next game on Sunday October 2.
