Phil Watson’s column: Performance still not there but five-point haul is a bonus

Have your say

We weren’t at our best again on Saturday, but we can’t complain too much after beating Acklam 52-0.

Yes, they were a poor side to be honest, but they tried their best to turn it into a scrappy game and at times that worked.

It wasn’t an overly impressive performance and we certainly lacked the killer touch that I know we’re capable of and there were too many handling errors.

That just shows the potential we have as a side and how far we could go this season.

We didn’t stick to the plan that Lee has set out for us, but you can’t really complain at a five-point win.

Everyone in the side knows we will need to improve against better opposition, I feel Acklam will be a little out of their depth in Yorkshire One this season.

Having said that, there were a couple of good performances on Saturday.

Tom Harrison made some good ground from fly-half, Chris Purdy put in a solid display, but he is a good player and I know he will produce even better for us.

Blake Nightingale looked sharp at number seven and there is more to come from him too in my opinion.

Another lad who impressed me was the aggressive fly-half himself Phil Stewart.

He waited patiently on the bench and fulfilled his role as waterboy well and then produced two assists when he came on.

Whether he is on the sidelines or at number 10, he adds aggression and passion to the ranks.

Heath away is a much tougher proposition this weekend.

They have a good number eight and their 10 is a good, creative force.

If we can press them and stop them playing their game and start producing with ball in hand, we have a very good chance.

Selection will be interesting, that’s for sure.
