SCARBOROUGH Pirates under-17s continued their winning form by defeating New Earswick 28-8.
New Earswick started strong playing down the slope at Oliver’s Mount and adopted a good kicking game which was dealt with by Pirates fullback Ross Gill who returned all their high kicks with good running.
It was 15 minus before the deadlock was broken when Nicky Brining crossed the line after a good set-piece move by Nathan Hakings to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
Josh Collin extended the lead after 20 minutes when James Cox made a fine break from halfway and provided the ball for Collin to score under the post with Al Paddock adding the goal 10-0.
The Pirates then suffered a setback first losing prop Ruben Rewcroft and then Ben Owram, and Jack Lang all with injuries.
However Liam Braithwaite and Tom Read bit the bullet and made the hard yards”.
Centre Nathan Hakings started to dominate play and was rewarded on 33 minutes when he scored near the posts, with no goal added the half- time score was 14-0.
New Earswick started the second half very strong, now playing up the slope they scored two early tries both out wide and with no goals added the score stood at 14-8 on 53 minutes.
With the alarm bells now ringing the Pirates responded well and pinned the York side in their own half, and having been awarded a penalty on 20 metres the Pirates strong running prop Braithwaite crashed over for a great try on 60 minutes, with no goal added, 18-8.
From the restart full back Ross Gill again returned the ball strongly and when Nathan Hakings put new signing Shane McAuley away down the left only to be pulled down short of the line. It was Nathan that crashed over after the quick play the ball and good handling from Nicky Brining and Josh McNeil on 64 minutes which took the score to 22-8.
The Pirates were now back in the driving seat and it was Al Paddock that sealed the win with a try and conversion in the closing minutes making the final score 28-8.
After a fine game Liam Braithwaite was awarded the man of the match.
The Pirates are at home again this Sunday playing Queensbury from Bradford at Oliver’s Mount 11.30am ko.
