Scarborough Pirates warmed up for their big cup final against Cottingham Tigers with a 30-6 success at Haworth Park Rangers in the Hull & District Winter League.

The Pirates return to Haworth Park to tackle the league leaders on Sunday December 30 in the Tom Beautiman Cup final, 1pm kick-off, and they will be happy to come away with a repeat of Saturday’s scorelineat the venue.

Player-coach Adam Lee said: “We are a new side made up mainly of the previous season’s under-17s players so it is a great achievement to get to the final.

“We lost out 26-8 against Cottingham, who are top of the league, earlier in the season but we had a lot of players, including myself and captain David Douthwaite unavailable on that occasion, and we will both be ready for this game.”

He added: “We have a full squad to choose from and the lads are up for the game, we have been training three times a week and over the past fortnight I have been working them hard.”

In the Haworth win, winger Tom Jenkinson led the way with three tries for the visitors, and he also topped the stats for drives in the game.

Centre Alex Collin had a superb game, topping the tackle count with 27 and scoring a try as well as earning the man-of-the-match award. Fellow youngster, full-back Alex Paddock scored the other try and Josh McNeil weighed in with three conversions.

Lee added: “I have been very impressed with the way that Josh has played at half-back this season, often as a single half-back, so we have been placing a lot of responsibility on him. I have asked him to play a lead role and he has done so superbly.

“David Douthwaite also impressed for us on his return to the side after completing his four-match suspension.

“The only low note for us was the fact that the referee sin-binned Jack Johnson for tackles on four occasions during the game, so it shows how much we dominated to still win the game by a comfortable margin.”
